editor reviews

Hapunan is a first-person survival horror game set in a Filipino barrio during the unsettling hours of dusk. You play as a young man tasked with delivering a package to a neighbor, but the simple errand spirals into a night of supernatural terror rooted in Philippine folklore. The core loop blends exploration, item management, and evasion. You creep through creaky wooden houses, collect keys and talismans, and avoid creatures like the manananggal and tiyanak. It is not a combat-heavy shooter; think of it as a stealthier, more culturally grounded take on games like Outlast or Layers of Fear. This will appeal to horror fans who enjoy slow-burn tension, players curious about Southeast Asian myth, and anyone tired of the same Western haunted house tropes. I first noticed Hapunan during a late-night indie showcase. The trailer's grainy VHS filter and the sound of a distant rooster crowing at midnight sold me instantly.

My first half hour was rough, and I mean that in a good way. The controls felt stiff at first, but once I adjusted the sensitivity and turned off motion blur, movement became serviceable. The game does not hold your hand. You have to figure out that certain items are used by combining them in your inventory, and the map is a vague sketch that you fill in yourself. What hooked me was a moment in the second act. I was hiding under a wooden bed while a tiyanak waddled past, its tiny footsteps clicking on the floorboards. The sound design was so precise that I could hear it sniffing the air. I held my breath, literally, because the game has a microphone feature that detects noise. That mechanic turned a simple hiding sequence into a sweaty-palmed ordeal. The level design is cramped and claustrophobic, which works, but the UI can be clunky. Trying to swap between a flashlight and a bolo knife mid-chase led to a few cheap deaths. Still, once I learned to map the quick slots properly, the flow improved dramatically.

I have played dozens of indie horror games, and most lose me after an hour. Hapunan kept me going because its scares are earned, not cheap. It does not rely on endless jump scares. Instead, it builds dread through environmental storytelling. A child's toy here, a half-eaten meal there. The folklore elements are not just window dressing. They affect how you solve puzzles. For example, you need to scatter salt to ward off a spirit, but salt is a limited resource. That tension between using an item for puzzle-solving versus survival is brilliant. Compared to similar games, Hapunan feels less polished but more sincere. It is not trying to be a blockbuster. It is trying to make you feel like a stranger in a familiar place. That said, the game does have bugs. I got stuck on geometry twice and had to reload. It also lacks a proper autosave, which is frustrating when you lose twenty minutes of progress. Despite these flaws, I kept playing because the atmosphere and cultural authenticity are unmatched. If you can tolerate some jank, the experience is worth it.

features

  • Dynamic Sound Cues 🎧: The game uses audio not just for atmosphere but as a gameplay mechanic. Certain enemies react to your real microphone input, so you must be quiet in real life to stay hidden.
  • Inventory Crafting 🧪: You combine simple items like vinegar, garlic, and herbs to create wards and healing salves. It is a light crafting system that encourages scavenging without overwhelming you.
  • Folkloric Bestiary 👹: Each creature has unique rules. The manananggal splits in half, so you must find its lower body to stop it. The tiyanak mimics a baby's cry to lure you. Learning these patterns is the core of survival.
  • Diegetic Map 🗺️: You draw your own map by finding pieces of charcoal. It is slow but immersive, forcing you to memorize landmarks and pay attention to your surroundings.

pros

  • Authentic Filipino Atmosphere 🇵🇭: The barrio feels lived-in, from the hanging laundry to the sari-sari store signs. The developers clearly drew from real childhood memories, and that authenticity makes the horror hit harder.
  • Meaningful Resource Scarcity 🔦: Batteries and matches are rare. You cannot fight every enemy, and you cannot light every room. This forces smart, tense decisions that keep every encounter fresh.
  • Microphone Integration 🎤: It is a gimmick in most games, but here it genuinely changes how you play. You find yourself whispering to your screen, which is both silly and terrifying.
  • No Hand-Holding 🚫: There are no objective markers or quest logs. You figure out what to do by reading notes and paying attention. It respects your intelligence and makes discovery feel earned.

cons

  • Stiff Controls and Animation 🕹️: Movement feels like wading through mud, and the first-person camera has a sluggish acceleration. It adds tension but also causes frustration during chase sequences.
  • Checkpoint System 💾: Losing progress because of a single mistake is punishing. A more generous save system, or at least a quicksave, would respect your time without removing the fear.
  • Bugs and Glitches 🐛: I encountered collision issues and one instance where an enemy got stuck in a wall, breaking the chase. A few patches would go a long way toward making the experience smoother.
  • Lack of Accessibility Options ♿: There are no subtitles for non-Tagalog speakers, and no colorblind modes. For a game that relies so heavily on audio cues, this is a missed opportunity to reach a wider audience.
